Shanghai enforces mandatory waste sorting

2019-06-27

On 31 January 2019 the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress passed the Domestic Waste Management Regulations, effective 1 July 2019. Individuals mixing waste can be fined up to RMB 200; companies up to RMB 50,000.

The regulations define four waste streams and require end-to-end sorted handling — source separation, sorted transfer, collection, transport and disposal, backed by a “no sorting, no collection” mechanism.

Shanghai collects about 26,000 tonnes of household waste daily (over 9 million tonnes a year). Sorting bins, wheels, axles and pedals — the hardware behind collection — see rising demand. Rimzer supplies rubber wheels, axles and pedals for bin manufacturers and retrofits.
